Who're you calling Old! ...Ok, I'm old*

Oh King Boomy*. He's still fantastic.  *references this scene from Avatar, the Last Airbender

The subject line applies to sister Bond, and if you change the word Old to Fat, it applies to me too!!
Because it was Sis Bonds last week, we got offers for food from Everyone and their dog!! Yesterday we literally ran from appointment to appointment. We had 2 lunches and a dinner in a 5 hour period. And these are not just mere lunches or snacking, these are Hispanic heaping piles. Let's just say, ..... ouch. My poor bod.

Our wonderful friend "Debbie" who's fiance got kicked out was baptised yesterday! We're so proud of her! I'm so excited for the many blessings she'll see in her life now that she's got the gospel!! We've already had some miracles as she's got an oak tree of faith in God. (an oak tree comes right after a pine log and right before a weeping willow on the metric scale of measurement.)

We also had a slight moment of missionary failure as one of us left the phone in the car, and the other one locked the keys (whoever was in charge of driving.... I dunno who that poor sap is) in the trunk. Heh heh heh........ oops!😅 Missionaries are supposed to head home at 9:00, 9:30 if a lesson is going really well. At 10:00, we finally figured out how to call Elder Gould, the mission office person in charge of cars and their problems. The members we were with spent a full hour trying to break into our car with a hanger, but finally, Elder Gould and his wife showed up at 11:00 with a spare key and some cookies. Wow! I'm impressed on so many levels!

Gotta run, but I'll see y'all next week! If any shocking news comes in, I'll try to let you know, picture style. But.... maybe not. Things are pretty out of control right now. Wow. How fun!

Ciao ciao all!

SHE MADE IT!!

Second lunch. Oof

Blurry photographic evidence

Heh heh. I'm sending this to Sis. Bond in a week!

What the-- It's Cold out here!

Hey y'all! Carma hit so fast! Here I was, mocking your pain (please feel free to say "You mock my pain!") And Florida was all like "Probs not." Thursday it was 86°. Saturday was 45°     |:[   Sister Bond has been really struggling with the cold. We'll be praying for her when she hits Utah in a week.

We also had exchanges on Saturday (oh what a day Saturday was). Blessed Sister Sorensen came and took Sister Bonds place. Sister Sorensen is in English work. Which means I got to teach a lesson in Spanish all by my one-sy. C-c-c-coolcoolcoolcoolcooool. *insert nervous sweating face* BUT, I know God was there and taking care of me. We had 5-ish people we tried to see. We saw one (who in hindsight would have been the most patient and understanding one) of 5, then we got stuck in traffic for an hour. God knew and took care of me. :] But really, God knew what I could do, and that whole lesson was all things I had practice with. Aka, we read 1 Nephi 8 out loud. That's basically all I do in language study! Wow. Church is true.

Also this week we got some crazy news from "Debbie," our investigator. She's recently decided to turn her life around and find God. (She's the one who was found wandering the temple grounds one day, wondering about the beautiful white building. Already a Fabulous sign!) She has been trying so hard to get married to her boyfriend, who she's lived with for the past 4 years, so she could get baptised next Sunday. We've been a little worried when he just wasn't being especially helpful or easy in this matter, but we trust that God loves her and will take care of her. Her wedding license ran out on the 10th, so we were going to hold the wedding Saturday evening. We meet with her Wednesday, and she tells us this story: "I'm watching TV with my fiance and a commercial about divorce comes on and informs me on how you can get a divorce super fast here in Florida. I make a casual remark to him, and he gets unnecessarily defensive. Things escalate, then he leave the room, but he leaves his phone on the sofa. In all 4 years living together, I've never looked on his phone, but I suddenly feel like I need to check it. Sisters, he's been cheating on me." Cue jaw drop. Here's a little more crazy though: he's already moved out, she's feeling really calm and peaceful about it, and now she's all set for baptism next week. ... Wut?

"Debbie" is over 9000. And so is God for that matter. But that was a bit of the crazy from this week. But you should go read the other Sister Baer's letter. You'll like it. It's gooud. (Bloop bloop bloop)*

Have fun y'alls, and make it a merry Christmas!

Studies are obviously going well...

JÖRG KLEBINGAT!!!!!

Elder Jörg Klebingat
Wow! The Lord loves me. He sent me one of my favorite members of the Seventy, right to my Zone Conference. And, as President Monson once put it, "Tears could not be restrained, nor should they have been. Such tears produce a certain cleansing of the soul." We ended an amazing conference with “I Believe in Christ,” and I could only sing about one line before I couldn't speak anymore.

It was really amazing to be so close to someone so spiritually strong and to be the recipient of his wisdom and knowledge. He didn't just say 'You should baptize more people.' He said 'You should be the kind of person that could have the spirit work through you to touch others in a critical moment to not only save their life, but the future lives of your family.' He treated us not as harvesters in the field, but as a gathered group of volunteers who've sacrificed precious years to do what God had asked.

I can't begin to say how grateful I am, so instead I'll leave you one or two of his thoughts. "You have been asked to do it, so you can't just choose not to do it." I learned a lot about obedience from him, another being "Obedience is freely given." Are you freely giving it? "The greater your faith in God, the less you will worry. The only thing you have to worry about is sin. And you've got a choice over that." I love that. All you have to fear is sin. And nothing more. Nothing.

Sorry it's so short and poorly written, but I gotta run. I love you all and I hope you realize just how close God is to you. It's Close. Rul close.

Ciao ciao all!

Axolotl!

Food, fiestas, y more food

 o_O
Remember the mayor in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? That's how I felt this week. We had at least 4 Thanksgiving dinners (though not all were on Thanksgiving, thank goodness!) and were invited to at least 2 more. Oh the blessed people of Florida! I'm grateful for a place where I'm so well fed and cared for.

It was Elder Rocha's birthday. We spent the last month hand-making a piñata for him. Turns out he'd never seen/heard of a piñata before, so we had to explain it to him. But it's ok, because we dumped 2 bottles of glitter in there! Glitter: the gift that keeps on giving! I'm going to let the pictures do most of the talking here.

This week I had my first Jehovah's Witness encounter. We went to see Milagro kinda spur of the moment and her friend was over. WAIT I HAVE TO TELL YOU!!!!!!! Pause story!

New story: Once upon a time I was standing in the hall at the church, something missionaries get very good at doing. Sis. Bond was talking to a new member, who we'll call Sheryl. Sheryl's friend was standing there a little awkward I attempted to talk to her. After a few tries, we switched to English where she told me her sister was recently serving a mission in the Czech-slovak mission. I told her I had this friend who just returned, named Elder Swink. She texts her sister and 5 min. later, we're both blown out of our little minds when the sister says, "I know Elder Swink; red hair, right?" BOOM! My neighbor's brother's mission friend's sister was standing in front of me. Wut. And that is why Matthew Swink got called to Czech Republic. End story.

Continuing with previous story: Milagro's friend was over, and she was asking us about the gift of tongues, why we celebrate birthdays, and if God's name was Jehovah. Worried about Milagro (who wasn't really buying into this whole J.W. thing, but was definitely not ignoring it), we share a video with Thomas S. Monson and say something like "We don't know. We'll write down your questions and study them. *Insert guffaw that could easily be mistaken for a laugh of triumph from JW friend* But it's late and we have to be going. Can we leave with a prayer?" Prayer happens, and it's a pretty good one. I knew before looking that Milagro felt the peace and good. Looking up, I saw that she was smiling contentedly. What I didn't expect to see was our JW friend weeping; El Espíritu Santo touched the rest of us, but He dropped a train on her, Edgar! Milagro made some comment on the Holy Ghost and I had to do my best not high-five her. But I walked out of what could've been a strange, spiritless meeting trying hard not to smirk. And I'm not saying I did anything to help. Like in Alma 26:11-12: But Ammon said unto him: I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God. Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever

 /:}

Yep. That was my week. Pretty good. I hope y'all enjoyed Thanksgiving, and it sounds like school is still going on. Best of luck with that...

Pues, Ciao!

Pictures:
Thanksgiving with English Class! We've never had such a great turnout!

The rest of them: Next time, 3 bottles of glitter!

Try Everything*

*References this Shakira/Zootopia song.

This week, we had 23 hours of service. Our service was on fire! At one point, Literally! The fire alarm went off at the food bank we serve at, so we had to evacuate the building and stand in the parking lot for a good 15-20 min. while the fire truck came and checked things out. Once we went back in, the alarm kept going off - 1 min on, 1 min off - for 15 min. What fun!

We also went and served at the big Prader-Willie convention on Friday and Saturday. We had to be there at 7:30, which is early even for missionaries. But, we live about 20 min away so this wasn't going to be that tricky. Or so we thought. We get a call from the sisters who are on the bike-week of their car-share transfer (meaning the elders have the car this week, and they'll get the car next week.) asking for a ride so they don't have to bike. We look at where we live. Then we look at where they live. Then we look at where service is. Then we look at how many miles we have left for this month. Then we look deep into our hearts and manage to say yes we'll come get you. Here's a map, for effect.

Yep. They wanted us there at 6:15. Don't do the math on how early you have to wake up at to manage that. It'll make you cry. But we're grateful. 😅

For those of you who don't have Google, Prader-Willie syndrome is a super rare genetic disorder where you just always feel super hungry. Like, starving. Always. And forever. We had to have snack time a lot, but it was sad to see the kids devour the equivalent of one and a half carrots, finely sliced. (think of Fun and Fancy Free: Mickey and the Beanstalk) AND because seeing other people eat makes these kids super anxious, we all ate the same thing, at the same time. OOHH!! It kinda broke my heart. And my reserve of energy. But mostly just my heart. We learned a dance, made wind chimes, made leis, decorated picture frames; It was so fun, and so, as all fun thing are, was not photographed. Yep. You'll have to just use your imagination. Or Google.

It was a really fun week (even though I didn't sleep or eat) and we got to do a lot of service. And that.

Well, have a good week yourselves, and go watch the Elder Ballard and Elder Oaks Face2Face. So funny! Such fire! Much wow! Ciao!

Designated driver! Hide yo' kids, Hide yo' wife!

Why does it always rain when I wear white?

I didn't take a picture, but I got to go into the temple and do Baptisms with Rosalia and Natacha! First time I got to go in!! I'm so excited for the bi-annual temple trip in February! (They went right before I arrived, darn it!)

¡Aye Car-umba!

Let's just say, I hate driving. And I thought Logan was bad.

Week 1 of Transfer 2. Driving is hard. Other than that, I can't remember much of this week. We got to watch Screenagers and it was actually pretty interesting. Now I know what to do with my kids and their phone addictions. Yup.

It's kind of nice not to be the greenest in the mission, but now I have to actually know something. Like how to sort meat, which is our 3 hour service every Wednesday.

The best part of this week was when we got to meet with a cute mom, Milagro, and her family. We had knocked on her door once before, but we weren't sure quite where we stood with her. This time, her son recognized her and she invited us right in. Her husband came out and he asked question after question, sorting out all the rumors he had heard. We were glad to answer his questions, and 2 hours later, we walked out, 1 Restoration pamphlet and 1 Book of Mormon lighter. I really think the dad, Gregoriano, will read it! And I've been praying really hard for him, just in case!

We've also been making a piñata for an Elder in our District whose birthday is coming up. It's going to be a soccer ball, and Sis. Bond is super excited.

Yep. A bit of a bland week, but with my bad driving, there was plenty of adrenaline.

Here are some pictures.

We had a Brazilian Barbeque for P-day today. That means Rice, beans, and Picante. It's a really juicy meat from Brazil. So Good!

Our new district with everyone except out District Leader, Elder Dodson, and his companion, Elder Gibson. ROLECALL!: Elder Rocha sitting, Elder Aliff with the meat, Sister Reynolds with the tablet, Sister Hardin in red, and, of course, Sis. Bond in front.

So close, and yet so far.

Well I hope yinz have a good day! [Me'thinks my gmail is down for the day. I hope y'all are still alive!]

Look what I did to/with my own hand!

To appease a whim, BULLET POINTS!!

-- A BAPTISM! AND I KINDA EVEN HELPED WITH IT! Meaning I would feel comfortable claimng it as my own since their first missionary discussion was my first discussion too! Like, first day, before I unpacked, I met and "taught" this family from Switzerland. Yep. The mom was one......hundred percent amazing and prepared by God. So yes, church is true. I got to watch something amazing happen.

-- Transfers: I will be staying in Windy Ridge and I will be "killing" my trainer, sending her home 5 days before Christmas. I'm pretty excited (partly cause that's all I know) and I think I now know how to make this a better transfer. Starting with my speaking more Spanish. I like what Dad said about what makes a missionary successful: the number of spiritual moments you have with others. I really like that. In a jump that makes perfect sense to me but won't make any sense to y'all, I was explaining to someone the difference between Elders and Sisters (the main difference being that Elders are male and Sisters are female. Also the sacerdocio.) But this guy asks "¿Que significa Elder?" Or, in English, "What does Elder mean?" I promptly responded with a solid O_________o face. So I'd like to pose the question to y'all's: What does it mean to be an Elder, and how does that differ from High Priest? And why are some people Elders and others just Brothers?

And now back to bullet points.
-- I got stung by a bee this Tuesday while trimming mini palm trees. My hand didn't stop swelling for 2 days. It wasn't until about yesterday that I felt it had returned to normal. Here's a pretty nasty photo of it. Nasty mostly because lighting is the least of your worries when your trying to take a picture of your hands. But, fun fact: mini palm trees have long spines that, when the fronds die, get really hard and sharp and pointy and scary. But, on the bright side, I found a lost plant in the palm trees out by the front sign. It had been there for a while so I convinced Hna Bond to let me take it home. It makes my day every time I see it! (It's currently sitting in the bottom of a milk jug. I'll take a picture when I get home :)

-- We saw over 5 police helicopters this week! One was over our apartments when we got home at night. Someone was breaking into cars or something. ... yup. That happened.

-- Umm..... that's all.

Thanks for your love and prayers! Have a good week y'all! Enjoy! Hermana Baer

P.S.Look! I made this with my own hand! The small one while my hand was swollen. And yes, it is the sleeve of an old shirt.
It's a rice bag to be warmed in the microwave. Says Lauren: let's say hypothetically I'm sewing a wheat bag for my companion cuz her little body is generally freezing or slightly broken [mild sprain].

It’s Wednesday . . . right?*

*Probably references this viral vime.

Oof. It was a long Wednesday this week. Literally every day I asked Sis. Bond if it was Wednesday. Which is odd, because nothing happened on Wednesday.

Tuesday I made breaded shrimp. It wasn't all that bad either. The only problem was that I thought the bag of shrimp contained only shrimp. Nope! It had shrimp, mussels, calamari, and octopus. And to make matters worse, the bag didn't reseal. But I continued with this plan and after one or two black shrimps, I got pretty good at it. And just for funsies, I breaded some octopus too. And it wasn't all that bad either. That is, until that night. Then it came back with a vengeance.

Also on Tuesday, we extended an invite to a (super-ready) investigator and her family. She was really open to the idea. Now, normally you set a date about a month in advance. Bishop believes she can be ready by Nov. 4. That's just under 2 weeks. This part she's not so sure about. She says she'll think about it and let us know tomorrow (or Wednesday for non time travelers). Nothing happened Wednesday. Our investigator says that's too soon, especially for her kids. The bishop tried to persuade her that she's ready and can set an example for her kids. She said she'd think about it. *For the record, Loki's got nothing on Bishop. He is the smoothest talker I've had the pleasure of hearing.*

We had interviews with the president on Thursday. We also had a campfire with the Relief Society. With S'mores. It was fantastic! No one had ever heard of a s'more before, and so they all got about 4 marshmallows on those small wooden skewers and Plunged them straight into the fire! [BWAHAHAHAHA!! Hermana Bond and I DIED!!] Talk about taking things for granted: imagine a world without s'mores. But they all really liked their burnt-to-a-crisp marshmallows.

We had Trainer Follow-up on Friday. I got to see the ol' Mexico crew again! Elders Fox, Isaacson, and Westover are doing pretty good.

Saturday was a special day. We went to help a recent convert paint his bathroom. It reminded me of working at the apartments every summer. [I also had a mini panic attack when literally everything was not done well: no taping, no tarping, no stirring, no plastic tray, AAH! Special thanks to Grandpa who taught me how to mow lawns and paint walls, both of which I've already done in my mission.]

Then Halloween party! There were some really clever costumes: a mom and a dad were Sully and Mike Wazowski and their one kid was Boo. Cute!

Also, bishop was Moroni and his wife was Esther. It was way fun! I even got a piece of candy! Woot! Sunday our investigator came back up to us and said she and her daughter have decided to be baptized on the 4th. Which is now only one week away. *Sweat sweat* No pressure! Heh heh heh... We have a week ahead of us.

Well, there you have it. My journal in a nutshell. Now you should go do something exciting, like reading the other Hermana Baer's letter! You'll like it!

Have a great week yinz!

Fogata! Lots of fire!

Sister Bond's favorite costumes (she's excited to see the new movie)

Bishop Amarydakis. The literal coolest

Hard work in the bathroom. Ok, sorry. I couldn't think of a better subtitle for this

Seafood!

Fried octopus is the long pointy one. It was kinda just really chewy. Then again, I did nuke it...

Hello Fatness, my old friend!

Ugh. We had fast food every day this week. CADA DÍA! But it's ok. I'm not bitter. I may have caught Hermana Bond singing "Eating, ever eating" to Called to Serve.

A story from this week: So there we were. Doing our daily 4 hours of studying. Again. Still. Forever. ANYWAYS, we get this phone call from a cute old lady the missionaries had visited once before. At that time, she was brand new from Venezuela (Puerto Rico? Suddenly I don't remember... ) and her daughter was about to have a baby. She told the missionaries they're welcome to come another day, but they have to call first. But she didn't have a number. And it's tricky to call someone when they don't have a phone. Anyways, after 2 months, she calls us saying "Where are you? You never came to visit!" 0,o ...Que? We visited her that day and she was so sweet! And her grandchild is so cute! And she just kept 'Amen'-ing and 'Hallelujah'-ing. 😄 (We're expecting a call from the Catholic church, asking us to stop stealing their members. ]:} ) The church is true.

Speaking of which, never before has more than 3 people showed up to sacrament meeting before the scheduled hour to start. But there they were! At 8 In the AM! At least 20 people!! AND ONE OF OUR INVESTIGATORS!! The Church Is True! Especially Hispanic wards. Yup. Speaking of that investigator, she might actually be a member. Which stinks, because she is so willing to learn and is so excited to go to the temple. Which is where she was first found, wandering the grounds. Yup. ........A story by Hermana Baer

Ok, pues, I dunno what else happened this week besides another lesson in English, a baptism, a Mormon party at Cafe Rio (they bought our dinner! A blessing on their heads! (Mazletof mazletof)), and lots of food, including my old nemesis: pinto beans and hotdogs - At the same time.

So Imma go read Jesus the Christ.
Which reminds me: spiritual thought of the day. I loved the talk by Elder Boyd k. Packer called "How to Survive in Enemy Territory." I also was reading in Enos, chapter 1 when Enos' family tree sunk in. His dad is Jacob, who has heard the voice of God. His uncle is Nephi, who needs no introduction. And yet Enos hasn't taken the gospel to heart yet. Sounds like a typical teenager. It reminds me of the quote, "We're only one generation from apostasy." It was a cool thought, and kinda hard to put into words. Yup.
On that poorly-worded thought, I'm gonna duck out.

Have a great week!
Ciao!

Sync Me! You’ve been practicing!*

*loosely taken from The Scarlet Pimpernel, a recurring joke about Chauvelin's inability to tie his cravat properly

Don't actually remember the real quote.... also, please send Noelle's messages to me! I wanna know too!
This week was at least faster. I think... Some of the best moments of this week included:

-- When the bishop announces to a Hispanic ward that church will begin at 8 am for the rest of the year. (Bwah-ha-ha! We were laughing so loud, and we still couldn't hear ourselves over the uproar! At least next week is the primary program, so we'll see just how true the church is next week. Aka if anyone shows up.)
-- When I went on exchanges with our English Sister training Leaders and got to teach a lesson in English. Guess what! I wouldn't be all that bad of a missionary if I could speak the language. (I'd also probably get pretty bored pretty fast. Spanish is a good challenge)
--When I got to talk to Elder Fox (from the MTC) at service on Friday. It was good to see an "old friend" again. I hope the other 2 are doing well.

Aaaaaaand, that's all I remember. Ok, I'll explain the header now.
So I've been having some problems with syncing my tablet, and until Wed didn't have access to LDS tools. I couldn't see who is in the ward. So many times I shouted "Sync me!" And I thought of Percy every time. Yep. Also, I am now a professional box popper, head-nodder, and car-backer. Sometimes I feel bad when people think I understand them because I keep nodding my head, but.... no hablo, entonces.....

Ok, well. I'm out of words. So photo time.

Exchanges! I was with sister Sorensen (who I'm not actually related to :[ ) the one in the blue.

My contacts rebelled so I taught the weekly math lesson blind.

Más servicio!! That place is HUGE!

Not actually sure what thats actually called, but it was potatoes in a spicy sauce with lettuce. Food from Peru. Simple but good.

We went fishing. You would dip the pole in and within 5 sec, you could catch a fish. It was crazy. I caught about 6 before passing the pole along. (3 were with a Spider-Man pole Elder McCourt bought for $3 at Wal-Mart. That was way fun!)

Ok, pues, I can't remember anything else from this week, (Besides the 2 days in a row we got 2 dinners. The Tongue was happy, but everything else was crying.) So I'll sign-out here. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll forget to address them for next time. Thanks BYYEEEEE!

Is it a sin to have a Sister pluck an elder's eyebrows?

Oh those elders. We get at least 1 spam/random call a week from them. Pictures of said eyebrow plucking attached. This week was ... good. *shrug* I super love when we get to talk to people and teach them, which happens probably more than we deserve, but as a trainee, there's a lot of time just sitting around studying. For example, on Saturday, we were up and studying at 8:30, and didn't stop studying until 5. I mean, I love learning and all that, but there's only so much I can learn about serving others when I have to stay inside for 5 hours (at least) every day. But it's ok. [Partly because I can't do anything about it, so I might as well learn to love it. }:" That's my loving it face, by the way.] In the talk The Principle of Work, he says “Let us realize that the privilege to work is a gift, that power to work is a blessing, that love of work is success.” So hard work it is!

This week we had Noche de Hispanidad. That was way fun! The Spanish people in this area have roots from all over, so on Saturday everyone came to celebrate and represent their country of origin. We had Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and a lot from Venezuela. Again, it was so much fun! Pulling up to the building, Hna. Bond warned me that Hispanic Mormon-standard time is way worse than just normal Mormon-standard time. We had to be there an hour early at 6 to set up the American table, she told me to expect others to start showing up at 7:15 to prep. Her jaw dropped when we walked in the cultural hall to find all the booths set up with everyone there and in costume. Goes to show that when there's a party, the Latinos don't dilly dally. (But church did start 10 min. Late on Sunday due to no one being there. Too much partying, I guess.)

We had some good lessons this week too. On Monday we had a good lesson with a family God has prepared. The mom was so excited to watch The Restoration hour-long movie even though it was (at least) 8:30 on a school night. Also, we arrived early to help her cute kids with math. It was crazy! The math assignment was in English, so I'd figure out what it was saying then tell Hna. Bond what to say in Spanish, then the daughter would listen in Spanish and translate it into French for her younger brother. 0.o This amazing young woman was thinking French, speaking Spanish, and writing English. She's amazing.

Oh yeah. So remember last time where I told y'all (or at least Someone) that I probably wouldn't ever be a yellow-shirted angel, well that turned out to be a lie. On Friday, we went and helped Feeding Children Everywhere make care packages for Puerto Rico. We started at 10 and left at 2:30, and in that time, we made 120,000 packages. It was so fun! I'm now a professional box-popper, and I've got the paper cuts to prove it.

Ok, pues, I gotta go, but have a great week, those of you who've made it this far, and while you're at it, have some more, commas, because, of course, commas are the best, and this sentence got way, way, Way off topic.

Gracias!
Hermana Baer

Helping Hands come in bulk. (Everyone got excited when the main group walked in.)

A "panorama" of Noche de Hispanidad

The American booth, which was already set up when we arrived.

The food offered at the US table was rolls, bought in bulk. Yeah. Murica.
